Oh. Wood. I carve. It's good to have something to do with your hands, you know? Turns out I do pretty well with wood. Usually little figures, but sometimes jewelry. Just little things I can give away so someone smiles.
[It had started way back in the war, and he'd just kept it up. It was a way to feed both the boredom of missions and his need to create. And the little wooden bits and bobs really did make people smile. Steve enjoyed making things for people too.
He gave a slight nod at the question. Klaus had told him a bit about ghosts, and abuse. His father . . . It was too broken to know how much he knew. Klaus had been drugged at the time and rambling. Steve had been drugged then too actually, though not to the same extent by any means.]
He told me a little about his life before. Your life I mean, I guess. But it wasn't exactly clear. We were both a bit . . . compromised at the time. And the cutting . . . mn. I'm not sure if the man who did it realized he was risking Klaus' life, but he should have. And I know Klaus wasn't in his right mind. Back then he rarely was.
[And then there'd been that night the man curled in his lap and begged to be found worthy, to have help to stay sober. How could he have ever said no? How could he not fall a little in love with someone who had such a harsh past he felt the need to escape even the barest memory of it? That had been the main reason the man seemed to use so heavily, at least from what Steve had gathered. That desire to forget. And waking up one day without Klaus there had just been . . . yeah.
He chuckled and gave the man a sweet look.]
You know, there's nothing stopping you from coming over right now. Or any other night for that matter. Or day. I don't sleep much, and while I'm not in the suite a lot of the day, if I'm here, I'm generally happy to have company. No need to wait for something formal among friends, right?
Oh. [The word is breathed out between both surprise and bemusement. How did that seem so fitting for Steve as a hobby? It's kind of cute, really, especially the way Klaus can absolutely picture him just leaving little wooden-carved trinkets lying about for people to find, or leaving them places for his friends.]
Okay... I'm just curious. I don't know what you know already, it'd be annoying to have to sit through a re-run, right? [He snickers a little, but it's hardly anything like a real laugh.
Klaus bites his lip and hesitates before asking.] Is that guy still here? The one that... did that to him?
[Does Steve know that he has a smile that could melt someone into a puddle? Because someone should probably tell him or something, that could totally be dangerous, you know. He gives a small, almost tentative one of his own in response.]
Thanks, Steve... um-- I think I'm okay for tonight? But... I won't forget that. [He points a finger playfully at the camera.] I'm gonna take you up on that one day.
[He chuckled and gave a slight shrug. The artist in him needed an outlet and the carving was a useful one. Couldn't always use a sketchbook, but you could usually find a hunk of wood. And people seemed to like getting little trinkets, so win-win.]
I'm an artist at heart, but the sketchbook isn't always the easiest thing to get to, you know? I like the carving. And I'd be happy to hear about your life Klaus. I don't think it would be boring, even if it is similar to what the other guy told me, But uh, lemme see. One sec . . .
[There was worry in his face as he did something with his device, face coming close to it as he worked. Eventually Steve let out a soft sigh and shook his head slightly, relief in his expression.]
No. I don't see his name listed anymore. You're safe Klaus. And If I see him show up, I'll warn you. Promise. No one's going to get you if you don't want it.
[There was an absolute note in his voice when he made that promise. If it was humanly possible for him to manage it, he'd protect Klaus from anyone and anything. He grinned at the camera again, wishing once more they were in the same room.]
See that you do. I always have food and warm bed Klaus. Remember that.
[There's a faint smile on his lips at the mention of being an artiist.]
My sister is an artist, too... she chose music as her form. violin. It's-- she's amazing, honestly, not that she would tell you so.
[His face shifts a little at the assurances. It's fine. He'd love to hear about his life. Learn who he is. All over again, in whatever new light might exist to whatever the last one left shrouded in darkness.] Right. I mean- yeah- obviously.
Oh, good. [He breathes it out at the confirmation that whoever it was, isn't even here any more. He can't deny he was a little concerned about it, honestly.]
Thanks, Steve... and... thanks for being awake tonight. I think I'm gonna try to get some sleep, but... I'll talk to you later?
[He almost doesn't want the conversation to end, but he can feel the lead-heaviness of sleep trying to sink down into his bones, and he figures he should follow it while he can.]
You know, I think I need to this paragon of a sister. She sounds pretty impressive. But I'm here if you need me Klaus. Call me, text me, stop by the suite. Whatever. You're welcome to come over anytime.
[Steve just smiled into the camera. Part of him would really like finding the skinny little guy in his bed again.]
[Steve would be good for Vanya, too, he thinks. The same way he's good for him. In that awful supportive way he has about him. Klaus isn't sure how he does it, but he does, and maybe Vanya would like him.]
